Chapter Fifteen

Taking Luke’s BMW, we drove up to Saltergate Car Park and parked up. As we walked over the road, in the near dark, a sense of excitement and nerves started to unfurl inside me. The crisp November air bit at my cheeks but I felt nothing except the energy buzzing through my veins.

The moon, in an early crescent phase, provided us with little light. Even though the night sky was completely clear, allowing the thousands of glittering stars to provide a beautiful backdrop, darkness surrounded us.

“I think I have a torch,” Luke said, patting his pockets. “Or I can shift and go ahead of you both, find the best route.”

I rolled my eyes. “Don’t be so ridiculous.”

I stopped on the edge of the hillside and closed my eyes as I exhaled. Holding my left palm open, I imagined a white ball of light emerging from my hand, then splitting into six little balls. In my mind, I whispered where I wanted to go and told them to find the best way down.

A sharp intake of breath next to me made me open my eyes. Biting back a squeal of joy, I watched, along with Luke and Joanna, in utter amazement as what I’d willed in my mind became an actual reality.

Floating off down the hillside, bobbing on an invisible air current and zig zagging across the rough terrain, the half a dozen little white balls lit up the hillside for us to make our way down.

Luke and Joanna glanced at each other.

“Come on guys,” I said, stepping out ahead of them. “We don’t have all night.”

Leaving them to follow me, I took the lead and followed my light guides with the utmost trust. The walk down, which I had done before, took half the time with my magical aides lighting the way.

Half an hour later, we were stood in the centre of the Hole of Horcum.

“I’m impressed,” Joanna said, coming to stand in front of me. “I’ve only ever seen an earth witch do what you just did and to achieve it that quickly and that seamlessly took her nearly a decade to accomplish.”

I smiled. “My head is just whirring with spells. It’s like a merry go round except instead of porcelain animals, it’s just pages of spells. As soon as I think about what I want, the right spell just jumps out at me. It’s completely bizarre.”

It honestly felt like each spell had a life of its own and wanted to fight to the forefront of my mind to live its potential, make its imprint on reality.

“I’m way out of my depth here, Cat,” Joanna said. “For me, and every other witch I know, learning a spell is no different to reading. We read it, remember it, practice it. What you’re describing is beyond me. I’ve never heard of it.”

“I can see them on the pages they were written on,” I said, watching them all flutter past my minds eye like a conveyor belt. “Each one seems to have its own.
